I'm Maxwell Cynn and I write deliciously romantic speculative fiction. Carrie Ann invited me by to share the release of my latest novel, THE COLLECTIVE. It's a story which could happen tomorrow. It could be happening right now. Imagine, if you will, a computer virus infecting your computer. While you read this blog post, flickers of light from your monitor are communicating with your subconscious. You are being brainwashed.
Dr. John Peterson is a criminal psychologist working at a correctional facility when he discovers the link with his patient's psychosis. That discovery sends him on a mind splitting adventure in search of the origins of the Nemesis virus. He finds the Collective. But that is only the beginning of his struggles. Along the way he meets Sarah - quiet, demure, safe Sarah. But is she who she seems? He also meets Jackie - a cyberpunk known by the hacker alias Sear. Jackie is a cutter, but there is more to her than being a young troubled girl.
I've loved speculative fiction since childhood. Great men such as Wells, Verne, Poe, and Bradbury inspired me to become a voracious reader - expanding my young imagination. A love of Tolkien, Lewis, and others opened my spirit to magic and romance. Roleplay games and theater taught me to develop characters and devise my own stories. As a teen I began to write tales of heroes and monsters, space aliens and intergalactic intrigue. None of those stories were published, thank God, and are forever lost.
It wasn't until my forties, after twenty years of marriage and raising two sons on the stories and games that inspired me, that I set my pen to paper. What emerged was THE COLLECTIVE. But it was not the first to be published. After writing several other novels, and a host of short fiction, my first published novel was CybrGrrl - a cyber-erotic tale of emerging artificial intelligence. The story follows Marie, an artificial intelligence program, from being a sexy desktop companion to CEO of a multinational corporation. Several readers have referred to it as orgasmic science fiction. I like that.
THE COLLECTIVE isn't listed in the Romance or Erotica categories. It is classic speculative fiction, but being a romantic myself I rely heavily on my character's emotions and several romances spice the narrative. The relationship developed between hero and heroine is crucial to the plot. I think the fans of CybrGrrl, and any fan of contemporary romance will be pleased - particularly those who enjoy a bit of mystery and intrigue with their romance. (think J.D. Robb and the "...in Death" series)
I'd like to thank Carrie Ann again for letting me pirate her blog and share my work. I'd also like to thank all those reading - I didn't really brainwash you, I promise - by sending everyone who posts a comment with an email address a little cyber-swag I developed for the release of THE COLLECTIVE. I'll also send a free download of CybrGrrl to anyone who asks in their post. But don't forget to post an email address so I'll know where to send it.
Imagine... You have a virus on your computer. It's tracking everything you do and sending that information to the Collective. It can't be detected by any virus scan or blocked by any firewall. If you have a microphone, they are listening. If you have a webcam, they are watching you. But they aren't just watching. Flashes of light from your monitor are communicating with your subconscious. You are being brainwashed.
Dr. John Peterson discovers the virus and embarks on a mind altering search for the origins of the infection driving his patients mad. He discovers the Collective, and they discover him. A battle rages between the Nemesis virus and the ArchAngel network with the fate of mankind in the balance. Will man succumb to Nemesis and become drones of the Collective or rise as billions of individual archangels to light the world with freedom? One man, one woman, and a network of hackers hold the key.

Created to be a sexy desktop companion program, Marie emerges into a life of her own. She leads her users, Adrian and Haley, through an erotic adventure as she processes what it is to be alive. The search leads her onto the Internet, and a virtual-world community where she can live an independent existence unfettered by the limits of her server - alive in the cloud - then back into the real world as a sexy robot. Along the way she teaches Adrian and Haley what it means to live and love beyond the confines of the merely physical and liberates her sister programs from their dull desktop existence.
