Please welcome my friend, the lovely Veronica Scott!
Hi! Thanks so much for coming today. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in upstate New York in a house with a library full of books, and when I ran out of things to read, I inevitably started writing my own stories. I married my high school sweetheart very young, but was then widowed. I’ve got two grown daughters, a livewire grandson and cats.
Always more stories to tell, new adventures to experience—my personal motto is, “Never boring.”
Tell us a bit about your book.
Wreck of the Nebula Dream is a Science Fiction Adventure with romantic elements. It’s a reimagining of the sinking of the Titanic, set in the far future, out among the stars. Here’s the story in a nutshell:Traveling unexpectedly aboard the luxury liner Nebula Dream on its maiden voyage across the galaxy, Sectors Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is ready for ten relaxing days, and hoping to forget his last disastrous mission behind enemy lines. He figures he’ll gamble at the casino, take in the shows, maybe even have a shipboard fling with Mara Lyrae, the beautiful but reserved businesswoman he meets.
All his plans vaporize when the ship suffers a wreck of Titanic proportions. Captain and crew abandon ship, leaving the 8000 passengers stranded without enough lifeboats and drifting unarmed in enemy territory. Aided by Mara, Nick must find a way off the doomed ship for himself and several other innocent people before deadly enemy forces reach them or the ship’s malfunctioning engines finish ticking down to self destruction.
But can Nick conquer the demons from his past that tell him he’ll fail these innocent people just as he failed to save his Special Forces team? Will he outpace his own doubts to win this vital race against time?
Is this part of a series?
Not really, although I have written three other novels (as yet unpublished) set in this same SF universe.
What did you find the hardest part of writing it to be?
I started out thinking I was going to be sticking pretty close to the factual events of Titanic, reinterpreted for a luxury spaceliner, but then my characters got into the action, as characters will do, and the plot started taking other twists and turns! I put in respectful nods to Titanic wherever appropriate – there aren’t enough life boats on the Nebula Dream, for one thing.
What was your favorite part?
I enjoyed weaving the romance between Nick and Mara in and around the fast paced events of the wreck itself and the aftermath. I relish books and movies with a strong hero and heroine who must get the job done, solve the problem, whatever the challenge may be, while also falling in love.
Rate your story in terms of steaminess
There isn’t much time for hot encounters while racing around trying to save yourself and others from a spacewreck. Nick and Mara are attracted to each other from the very first scene but they only manage a few stolen moments of romance in the novel. So there’s definite warmth but no heat LOL! Their relationship develops and deepens as they work together against time to solve the problems.
Who is your favorite romance author?
If I must pick one, I’ll go with Nalini Singh, for her Psy Wars and her GuildHunter series. I can lose myself in either world for a long time!
What is your favorite romance book or series?
I will set aside anything, any time, to read a new Alpha & Omega novel by Patricia Briggs. I love Charles and Anna! Although I am also very fond of Elizabeth Jennings Pursuit. My copy of that is dog eared.
Who is your favorite romance character? If you could go on a date with that person, what would you do? Details please! *wink*
Can I ask Ms. Singh to write me one of her angels just for me? A cross between Raphael and Noel, with a bit of Illium. And he’d take me flying, obviously, show me things I’d never seen from that vantage point. We’d have a picnic in some deserted but beautiful spot that only a winged person could reach and then while away the afternoon exploring the differences between angel and human. Hmm, somehow I’d have to figure out the becoming immortal thing though, so I wouldn’t lose him! Well, maybe I should think about a shifter then, your shifters are very hot……can I get back to you on this? LOL!
Boxers or Briefs?
What is next for you?
I’m doing major revisions on my next paranormal romance set in Ancient Egypt, Warrior of the Nile.
What were your first impressions of each other?
Mara: I noticed Nick right away, while we were waiting at the spaceport. He’s confident but not cocky – the kind of person you just know you can depend on, especially in a crisis. Wow, was I right about that! (She smiles at Nick.) And of course he’s very handsome.
Nick (Fidgets a little): Yeah, Mara caught my eye – I’m a leg man and she’s got gorgeous legs. But she was in her all business mode that day, working on contracts or something, very intense, shutting out the world. I kept sneaking glances at her on the shuttle, wishing there was a seat next to her so I could at least try making conversation.
What are your favorite parts about each other?
Mara: He’s no nonsense. He steps right up and takes action when the occasion calls for it. (Smiles at Nick.) But there’s a lot more to him than just being a Special Forces tough guy. Nick’s a terrific person, very caring, good with kids….
Nick: Ok, you’re ruining my reputation as a stone cold operator. (Laughs.) Talk about no nonsense – that’s Mara. She keeps her head in an emergency, which I admire. She saved us a few times back on the Nebula Dream. A man couldn’t ask for a better partner, on all levels.
What’s next for you?
Nick: Well I know Veronica doesn’t want us to provide spoilers, so I’ll just say after all we’ve been through, Mara and I plan to take some time together, away from it all.
Mara: And definitely not on another cruise ship, not on sea or in space!
